Psychological & educational assessments

Psychological and educational assessments are used by psychologists to assess a range of cognitive (i.e. thinking) abilities in both adults and children. At Retanne O’Leary Psychology, I offer the most up-to-date, gold-standard measures of cognitive assessment, which is conducted in a gentle and supportive space that allows children, adolescent and adults to feel comfortable and achieve the most accurate result.
These are comprehensive, individually administered tools that offer interpretive power for a range of issues.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment

Our ASD assessments are carefully tailored to the assessment needs of the individual. Autism assessments can be conducted with children, adolescents, and adults. They involve a combination of standardised assessments, clinical and naturalistic observations, and in-depth interviews with care givers and educators. We provide a comprehensive report that can guide effective therapeutic interventions. These can be highly beneficial in understanding how an individual brain functions and can be utilized to help harness their strengths and avoid misinterpreting some of the difficulties that they may face due to not knowing their unique neurodivergent profile.

Adaptive Behaviour Assessment

This assessment provides a complete picture of an individual’s practical life skills and capacity to deal effectively and independently with the demands and challenges of everyday life. This assessment assesses communication, selfcare, socialisation capacities and motor skills capacities. It is particularly useful for evaluating those with developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and learning disability and informs the development of targeted skill building intervention.

ADHD Assessment

Our comprehensive ADHD assessment focuses on capacity for attention for non-preferred tasks, ability to inhibit distractions and stay on task, pervasive patterns of impulsivity and hyperactivity, aggression, learning or social difficulties, time management, planning and organisational skills. We use various assessments tools included as part of an comprehensive behavioral assessment for a thorough assessment so as determine factors that may be contributing to difficulties in academic life and peer/family relations.

Cognitive Assessments

Our Cognitive assessments are used to
determine someone’s general thinking
and reasoning ability, commonly
referred to as intellectual functioning.
These assessments can be
recommended when an individual is
having difficulty with their learning or
understanding broader difficulties in
school, tertiary education or
workplace settings. Some individuals
might also seek cognitive assessment
to find out if they are eligible for
certain support services or funding
programs. Alternatively, these
assessments can be used to provide
valuable information on someone’s
cognitive profile and abilities and
guide individualized intervention and
educational supports.

Educational Assessment

Our educational assessments evaluate an individual’s academic skills and knowledge. This can be immensely helpful for students who are experiencing difficulty in school. Including an educational assessment alongside an student’s developmental history and academic results is used to identify underlying specific learning disorders. (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia). From such results, tailored support plans can be devised based on individual’s strengths and challenges.

Psychological Counselling

Individuals are often dealing with difficulties they experience as challenging and overwhelming, leading to a range of complex emotions. Our approach is tailored to each individual’s unique needs, interests and stage of development. Our counselling sessions focus on different aspects of mental health, including feelings, self-esteem and resilience. We are committed to providing a safe and caring environment where individuals can express their emotions and learn valuable coping skills.
